WHERE TO GO IN FEBRUARY
Travel Inspiration for February
February can take you to frosty wildernesses like Canada and the Nordic countries for a wintry break, or to the heat of Brazil, Thailand or southern Africa while avoiding the crowds. Much will depend on the experience you’re after, the length of time you have, and what weather suits you best.
Take photos of the gorgeous newborn elephants or lions in Kruger National Park, South Africa. Get your dancing shoes at the ready and join exuberant parades in Salvador, Brazil. Or, for those with a bit of extra time, journey from head to toe in New Zealand. We’re here to chat through the options.
Costa Rica
February is warm and dry and an excellent time for wildlife spotting, such as screeching macaws, swinging howler monkeys, and sunbathing crocodiles. Rainforests, such as Corcovado and Tortuguero (only accessible by boat or plane) are home to sloths, leatherback turtles, and toucans. Osa Peninsula offers the opportunity to spot humpback whales, and Nicoya Peninsula is known for its beaches and adrenaline-charged adventures.

New Zealand
New Zealand’s scenery is every bit as jaw-dropping in person as it is on the big screen. February is the height of summer and with so much on offer, you’ll want to stay at least 21 days. Begin in the North, where turquoise waters await you in the tranquil Bay of Islands. Rotorua and Napier supply your cultural fix, then head south for epic outdoor adventures. Snow-capped mountains rise above lush meadows, surrounded by renowned vineyards.

Brazil
February is carnival time in Brazil! Cities explode with music, dance and spectacular parades. Beyond the festivities, it’s an ideal time to explore the Amazon rainforest, with slightly lower rainfall making wildlife spotting easier. Trancoso, with its natural pools formed by coral reefs, is a wonderful way to end a lively holiday. Of special note is Iguazu Falls, thundering this time of year with impressive summer water volumes.

Iceland
A week in the geological wonderland of Iceland in deep winter will give you time to explore Reykjavik’s food and folklore culture and participate in more remote experiences. Perhaps head to the ice caves and glacier tunnels of Langjökull or take a healing soak in the thermal pools of the Blue Lagoon. Long nights can be spent chasing the Northern Lights away from the crowds, followed by cosying up in remote and exclusive luxury lodges.

South Africa
In just a 10-day South African adventure you can experience the vibrant Cape Town with its Mediterranean vibe, followed by wine tasting in the Cape Winelands. Continue to Grootbos Private Nature Reserve for marine wildlife spotting, and then a relaxing coastal stop in Plettenberg Bay. Top it all off with thrilling game encounters in Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. Further north, Kruger is alive with newborn animals and lively birdlife.
