NAMIBIA: ONE OF AFRICA’S MOST REMARKABLE DESTINATIONS
Having visited Namibia several times over the years, I continue to be amazed by the diversity of experiences and extraordinary landscapes this remarkable country has to offer.
For many people, Namibia is not the first destination that comes to mind when planning an African holiday. Yet those who visit often tell me it has become one of the most memorable journeys they have ever taken. It is a country of extraordinary contrasts, where towering sand dunes meet rugged mountains, where desert adapted wildlife survives in seemingly impossible conditions and where vast open landscapes stretch as far as the eye can see.
What makes Namibia so special is the incredible sense of space and freedom. Unlike many destinations, there are no crowds, no busy roads and no feeling of rushing from one place to the next. Instead, Namibia encourages you to slow down, absorb the scenery and enjoy the journey itself.
One of the questions I am often asked is whether clients should drive or fly between destinations. My answer is usually both.
Namibia is one of the best self-drive destinations in Africa, with excellent roads and stunning scenery at every turn. Driving allows you to appreciate the scale of the country and discover some of the hidden gems along the way. However, distances can be considerable, so I often recommend combining driving with light aircraft flights. This provides the perfect balance, allowing you to enjoy the adventure of a road trip whilst maximising your time in some of the country’s more remote and spectacular regions.
For first-time visitors, I usually suggest beginning in Sossusvlei.
Located in the heart of the Namib Desert, this is one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes. The giant red dunes are among the highest in the world and create a constantly changing canvas of colour and light.
Watching the sunrise over the dunes is an experience I never tire of. Climbing Big Daddy at dawn rewards you with breathtaking views across the desert, whilst nearby Deadvlei offers one of the most photographed scenes in Namibia. The contrast between the white clay pan, ancient camelthorn trees and towering orange dunes is simply extraordinary.
Sossusvlei is also home to some exceptional lodges, many of which offer incredible stargazing experiences. Namibia has some of the clearest night skies in the world and spending an evening under a blanket of stars is something that stays with you long after you return home.
From Sossusvlei, I often recommend travelling north into Damaraland.
This rugged and remote region is one of the highlights of any Namibian itinerary. The landscape is dramatic and ever changing, with granite outcrops, dry riverbeds and vast open plains creating a wilderness unlike anywhere else in Africa.
Damaraland is famous for its desert adapted elephants and black rhino. Tracking these animals with expert guides is a fascinating experience and feels very different from a traditional safari. Every sighting feels like a genuine achievement.
The region is also rich in history. Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to thousands of ancient rock engravings created by some of the earliest inhabitants of the area. Exploring these remarkable sites provides a fascinating insight into Namibia’s past.
Another unforgettable experience that I can arrange is a visit to the Himba people in the remote north of the country.
The Himba are one of Africa’s most distinctive indigenous communities and have maintained many of their traditional customs and way of life. Meeting members of the community and learning about their culture offers a rare and meaningful insight into a world that has remained largely unchanged for generations.
These visits are arranged carefully and respectfully, ensuring they benefit local communities whilst providing travellers with an authentic cultural experience.
No journey through Namibia would be complete without spending time in Etosha National Park.
Etosha is one of Africa’s great wildlife destinations and offers exceptional game viewing throughout the year. The vast salt pan that dominates the park creates a unique landscape and attracts an incredible variety of wildlife.
Elephants, lions, giraffes, zebra and numerous antelope species are commonly seen, whilst Etosha is one of the best places in Africa to encounter endangered black rhino.
One of the things I particularly enjoy about Etosha is that the wildlife viewing does not stop when the game drive ends. Many lodges overlook waterholes, allowing guests to relax and watch animals gather throughout the day and into the evening.
For those looking for something even more remote, the Skeleton Coast is an extraordinary addition to a Namibian itinerary.
This wild and dramatic coastline is where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. Endless beaches, seal colonies, shipwrecks and towering dunes combine to create one of the most striking landscapes in Africa.
Flying into the Skeleton Coast is an adventure in itself and offers some of the most spectacular aerial scenery imaginable. It is a destination that perfectly captures the raw beauty and sense of wilderness that makes Namibia so special.
