THAILAND: A DESTINATION I RETURN TO TIME & AGAIN
When I was last in Thailand, it reminded me exactly why it remains one of those destinations I return to — and recommend — with complete confidence. It is undeniably beautiful, of course, but its appeal runs far deeper than scenery alone. There is a natural rhythm to the country: temples shimmering in the soft light of dawn, jungle-clad islands rising from jade waters, markets fragrant with lemongrass and chilli, and plates of food arriving vibrant, balanced and utterly delicious. All of it is underpinned by a hospitality so intuitive that every step of the journey feels quietly and impeccably considered.
Thailand has an extraordinary ability to both invigorate and calm you. One moment you are immersed in colour, spice and city energy; the next, you are barefoot on warm sand watching the sun dissolve into the sea. It is this effortless balance — between glamour and grounding, vibrancy and stillness — that makes it such a compelling destination to design around, and why I continue to create journeys there with such enthusiasm.
Bangkok: A City That Constantly Surprises
I began in Bangkok, a city that always shifts expectations. Yes, it is busy and brilliantly alive, but it is also refined, creative and deeply cultural.
Staying at Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River was the perfect introduction. Positioned directly on the river, it feels like a sanctuary within the city. For anyone who has experienced Bangkok’s traffic, you will appreciate that the most elegant way to move around is by boat — and the Four Seasons’ private boat for guests makes this wonderfully seamless.
The design is contemporary yet warm, filled with art and generous spaces, and the service anticipates your needs before you’ve even voiced them. If you are booking, I would suggest the Premier River View rooms — specifically 06, 07 and 08 on the 4th, 5th and 6th floors — as they offer the most spectacular views over the Chao Phraya River.
The dining is exceptional. From the Michelin-starred Yu Ting Yuan to Riva Del Fiume Ristorante, Palmier, and the celebrated BKK Social Club (which must be booked in advance), every meal felt carefully curated. Café Madeleine deserves a particular mention for its exquisite pastries and cakes — a small indulgence that quickly becomes a daily ritual.
What I love most about Bangkok is the contrast. One morning I was exploring the colourful flower market and ancient temples with a brilliant private guide, learning about Thailand’s rich history. Later that evening, after a visit to the bustling night markets, I found myself on a rooftop overlooking the glowing skyline, cocktail in hand. For the adventurous, a tuk-tuk ride adds a touch of fun; alternatively, a private guide ensures a more curated experience. It is this interplay of culture and cosmopolitan energy that makes Bangkok such a compelling beginning.
Southern Thailand: Where You Truly Switch Off
From the city, I travelled south, where Thailand’s natural drama unfolds in full. In Phuket, I visited some exceptional private villas — Villa Nobadol being a particular favourite — and elegant coastal retreats. Here, luxury is defined by space and privacy. Infinity pools overlook the Andaman Sea, dedicated teams take care of every detail, and time seems to slow.
Days were spent on the water, longtail boats gliding into hidden lagoons, swimming in warm turquoise seas, and returning for relaxed sunset dinners. Venturing into Phang Nga Bay is an experience in itself — the limestone formations are towering, cinematic and unforgettable.
For honeymooners, anniversaries or simply those needing a genuine pause, this region offers the perfect setting.
Koh Samui & Kamalaya: Wellness with Purpose
One of the most memorable parts of my time in Thailand was staying at Kamalaya on Koh Samui.
.
Kamalaya is not a conventional spa resort. Built around a centuries-old meditation cave once used by monks, it carries a sense of purpose and depth. Wellness here is structured and meaningful — personalised programmes guided by experienced practitioners, consultations that are thorough, and treatments that extend far beyond relaxation.
Everything, from nutrition to therapies, is tailored to individual goals — whether that is stress management, sleep optimisation, detox or simply recalibration. I always recommend booking one of their structured programmes, and I can arrange a call with one of their naturopaths to determine which would suit you best. A minimum of a week is ideal to fully benefit.
It works beautifully for couples, but equally well for solo travellers. The communal dining table brings together fascinating guests from across the world, creating connection without pressure.
If you are selecting rooms, the Hillside Room Sea View (5 and 14), Villa Garden/Superior Suite Garden View (36) and Suite Sea View (27, 33 and 34) offer particularly lovely outlooks.
I left Kamalaya feeling genuinely reset — clearer, calmer and wonderfully restored.
Northern Thailand: Gentle & Grounded
In the north, around Chiang Mai, the atmosphere softens. Mountains replace coastline, and temples glow quietly at dawn.
Luxury here feels understated and authentic — boutique retreats, private temple visits, artisan workshops and immersive cultural experiences. It adds depth to an itinerary and balances beautifully with time by the sea.
Why Thailand Works So Beautifully
Thailand continues to impress me with how effortlessly everything comes together. Transfers are smooth, service standards are consistently high, and the range of luxury accommodation is extensive — from riverside elegance and secluded villas to world-class wellness sanctuaries.
It is also remarkably versatile. A journey might combine urban sophistication in Bangkok with island-hopping by private boat, followed by a transformative stay at Kamalaya. Or it might focus entirely on culture and coastline.
Why I Still Recommend It
Thailand remains firmly on my list of destinations I recommend with complete confidence. It offers glamour without pretence, beauty without excess, and wellness with real substance.
For those seeking exceptional service, extraordinary scenery and the opportunity to properly switch off, it delivers time and again. And when thoughtfully curated and beautifully paced, it becomes far more than a holiday. It becomes restorative.
If Thailand has been on your radar, perhaps it is time to experience it properly — and as always, we would design every detail around you. Flick through my Thailand lookbook for further inspiration on where to go and where to stay.
