The cultural, historic and natural highlights of Rwanda

Rwanda, often referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” has steadily emerged as one of Africa’s most luxurious travel destinations. This enchanting East African country offers an unparalleled combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and world-class hospitality. From its mist-shrouded rainforests to sparkling lakes and vibrant cities, Rwanda is a haven for discerning travellers seeking exclusivity and adventure.
The best time for gorilla trekking and safaris is during the dry seasons which are from June to September and December to February.
Every journey in Rwanda begins in its capital, Kigali. This vibrant and impeccably clean city is a testament to the country’s remarkable transformation. On arrival, visitors are welcomed into an oasis of luxury at establishments like the Kigali Serena Hotel or The Retreat, a boutique hotel. Both offer five-star accommodation complete with fine dining, spa services, and panoramic city views.
No visit to Rwanda would be complete without a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial which is a profoundly moving experience, offering insight into Rwanda’s past while showcasing its inspiring journey toward reconciliation and growth. Art lovers can explore galleries like Inema Arts Centre, where local artists display contemporary African masterpieces.
And then of course there’s the awe-inspiring experience of gorilla trekking. Nestled in the misty mountains of Volcanoes National Park, this once-in-a-lifetime adventure brings you face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Permits are limited and highly sought-after, ensuring an exclusive and intimate encounter for one hour with the gorillas.
Stay at the opulent One & Only Gorilla’s Nest, a sanctuary of modern luxury amidst the lush wilderness. Alternatively Singita Kwitonda Lodge is another wonderful place to stay which offers sustainable design with breathtaking views of Volcanoes National Park and access to gorilla trekking adventures.
If you travel during September you might be lucky enough to experience the Kwita Izina (Gorilla Naming Ceremony). This is the annual Rwandan ceremony of naming the new born baby gorillas and usually takes place in September at Musanze. The Kwita Izina event attracts the attention of several prominent personalities and public figures both internationally and locally. I was lucky enough to experience this wonderful event.
For those who dream of a classic African safari, Akagera National Park offers an extraordinary experience. This conservation success story boasts the Big Five, including lions and rhinos, along with a plethora of other wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, and hippos.
Elevate your safari with a stay at Magashi Camp, an exclusive lodge overlooking Lake Rwanyakazinga. This eco-luxury camp combines sustainability with indulgent accommodation.
Enjoy morning game drives, boat safaris, and sunset cocktails while surrounded by the breathtaking savannah.
Rwanda’s sparkling jewel, Lake Kivu, offers a tranquil retreat for those seeking relaxation. Framed by rolling hills and dotted with picturesque islands, this vast freshwater lake is perfect for unwinding after an adventure-packed itinerary.
Luxury accommodations like Lake Kivu Serena Hotel provide beachfront access, infinity pools, and gourmet dining. Guests can enjoy kayaking and sunset cruises. For the ultimate indulgence, book a private villa where you can savour bespoke meals crafted by a personal chef.
Home to one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, Nyungwe Forest National Park offers a unique blend of adventure and serenity. The park is famous for its canopy walk, a suspended bridge that provides breathtaking views of the lush forest below. Visitors can also embark on chimpanzee trekking, birdwatching, or nature hikes.
The One&Only Nyungwe House is the epitome of rainforest luxury. Situated on a working tea plantation, this boutique resort offers bespoke wellness experiences, including yoga sessions overlooking the forest and spa treatments using indigenous ingredients. Gourmet dining showcases local flavours, ensuring a sensory journey that complements your exploration of the park.
Rwanda’s cultural heritage is as captivating as its landscapes. Private tours of traditional villages allow travellers to engage with local communities, learn about traditional crafts, and participate in vibrant dances. The Azizi Life Experience offers bespoke cultural workshops, from basket weaving to Rwandan cooking classes, ensuring meaningful connections with the heart of the country.
Rwanda’s commitment to sustainability makes it a standout destination for eco-conscious travellers. Luxury establishments across the country prioritize environmental conservation and community upliftment. Properties like Bisate Lodge not only offer unparalleled comfort but also contribute to reforestation projects and local employment.
On the last Saturday of every month in Rwanda, there is Umuganda day. This is a day set aside to help neighbours, friends and family and Rwandans between the ages of 18 and 65 are obliged to take part. Activities include building roads, primary schools, health centres and collecting litter. When I last visited Rwanda I ended up building a road, which was such a rewarding experience!
Rwanda is a destination that redefines luxury travel. Its breathtaking landscapes, rare wildlife encounters, and commitment to sustainability make it a truly unique holiday choice. Whether you’re trekking through misty mountains, gliding across serene lakes, or immersing yourself in rich culture, Rwanda promises an unforgettable experience.
